In August 2022, FCC memorandum 19-74A1 came into effect. This allows carriers to discontinue support to legacy telephone lines leaving many businesses worrying about if their service would be discontinued. While some may opt to discontinue their POTS offers, the FCC has not ordered the termination of POTS service contrary to what some would suggest. However, this directive gives a strong hint as to the FCC’s goals for the future, POTS is going away. The reason is that there are better, more reliable and cheaper technologies that achieve the same goals.
